Four things have totally changed my life: A camera, a shop, wedding
and an island.
Hello, I’m Royce Dell Harmon, owner of Hawaii Weddings by R&D
Photography. My life started in New Jersey, and my second life started
nine years later when I discovered the family’s Polaroid. Then in high
school, I got a manual 35mm camera.
Going by the initials “R.D.,” I naturally gravitated to the R&D Camera
Shop in my neighborhood. The owners taught me about cameras, film and
composition, backgrounds, flashes and positioning. They made me a
better photographer, and I promised myself that I’d never forget their
kindness.
Then, I took photos at a family wedding. I couldn’t stop clicking my
camera. Weeks later, when the bride, groom, and the family looked at
the pictures, the memories came flooding back. And so did the
happiness.
I
was hooked from that day on, and I wanted to spend my career as a
wedding photographer.
Soon after high school, I came to Honolulu…and never left. Perfect
weather 350 days a year, sunrises that make you get up early and sunsets
that are as individual as snowflakes.
I
loved Hawaii, but it was tough not working in photography. Luckily, a
friend needed photos of a concert he was promoting: I loved the action
and the reaction my photos received.
It
was time to start my own business, and named it after my favorite shop
back home: R&D Photography Images was born in 1994. During these years,
I occasionally found myself helping couples with last minute pre-wedding
emergencies: finding a wedding cake, a hairdresser or a beach locale.
The gratitude and happiness of these newlyweds made me want to always
help beyond photos.
In 1999, we expanded
to become Hawaii Weddings by R&D Photography Images. I love capturing
images, I love bringing people a lifetime of memories, and I love to
taking care of customers like family.
